Marc Lamont Hill, host of BET News, to lecture at Quinnipiac University

HAMDEN - Marc Lamont Hill, host of BET News and a political contributor for CNN, will present the lecture, “Promoting Diversity in Education,” at 7 p.m. March 21 a Quinnipiac University, according to a release.

 

The lecture will be held at Burt Kahn Court in the Athletic and Recreation Center  275 Mount Carmel Ave., and is free and open to the public, the release said.

 

"Hill, a distinguished professor of African-American studies at Morehouse College, has been a social justice activist and organizer since his days growing up in Philadelphia," the release said. "He is a founding board member of My5th, a non-profit organization devoted to educating youth about their legal rights and responsibilities. He also is a board member and organizer of the Philadelphia Student Union. Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Law Reform Project, focusing on drug informant policy. Over the past few years, he has actively worked on campaigns to end the death penalty and to release numerous political prisoners.

 

"An award winning journalist, Hill is the former host of the nationally syndicated television show, 'Our World with Black Enterprise,' and the inaugural host of “Huff Post Live,” as well as a former political contributor to Fox News Channel. Hill has received numerous prestigious awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. In 2011, Ebony Magazine named him one of America’s 100 most influential black leaders," the release said.

New Haven's Alfred Marder to speak at the New Haven Museum

NEW HAVEN - The New Haven Museum reports: "By May of 1954, McCarthyism had reached a fevered pitch throughout he United States. Federal agents came for Alfred Marder at his New Haven home, and rounded up others in the Elm City."

This the museum shares in a release, "was sensational news; one newspaper headline screamed: '7 Leaders of Commie Party Seized in East...'.” 

Now, Marder, 94, will  "share a vivid first-person account of FBI surveillance, phone taps, fear, and the loss of employment due to his arrest, during “The Right to Speak One’s Mind: A Conversation With Al Marder,” at the New Haven Museum at 5:30 p.m. April 14, the release said.

 

The free event will be moderated by historian Mary Donohue, who interviewed Marder for her article, “A Life of Conviction” in the Spring 2016 edition of “Connecticut Explored,” the magazine of Connecticut history, the museum's release noted

 

Connecticut Judge Andrew Roraback will be part of the discussion, "sharing his insights on Marder’s legal defense by his cousin, the celebrated Catherine Roraback," the release said

Malloy to hold town hall forum in New Haven

NEW HAVEN -  Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman will hold a town hall forum in New Haven from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 23 to discuss "his budget principles, his proposals for adapting state government to a changing economy, and other issues concerning the future of the state," according to a release.

The forum will be held in the atrium of Wilbur Cross High School, 181 Mitchell Drive, the release said. The forum is open to the public.

Residents who would like an opportunity to ask the governor a question should arrive about 30 minutes prior to the start of the event to submit their name on a sign-up sheet, the release said.

The event will be the third in a series of town hall forums Malloy and Wyman will hold during the 2016 legislative session, the release said.

Dates and locations for additional town hall forums in the series will be announced during the coming weeks, the release said. Additional information is available at www.ct.gov/governor.
