Effort underway to build Connecticut Improv theater

HARTFORD - Sea Tea Improv's effort to create a Comedy Theater a "permanent home for comedy in Connecticut in the heart of downtown Hartford" is underway.

"We're going to build a comedy theater in the heart of downtown Hartford. Will you help us?," the improve group asked in a release.

"What do Boston, New York, Chicago, Providence, Los Angeles, Burlington, and Minneapolis all have in common? They all have improv theaters! It's time for Hartford to join the big leagues by opening our own thriving comedy theater."


"After six years of bringing improvisers together throughout the state, Sea Tea Improv is ready to own and operate a space for comedians, actors, and musicians," the release notes.

"The spot we've picked out is easily accessible and will put feet on the street of our great little city. We love Hartford and we want it to have this affordable and fun entertainment opportunity for all its people, every night of the week."

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 24 at the Hartbeat Ensemble Theater in Hartford.

Blue Mass to be held at the Cathedral of St. Joseph May 4

 
HARTFORD - Archbishop Leonard P. Blair "will celebrate a Blue Mass to pray for the men and women who protect citizens every day from the perils of our society, and aid communities in their time of need," according to a release. T
 
The sixth annual Archdiocesan Blue Mass will begin at 11 a/.m. May 4h at the Cathedral of St. Joseph.

"According to the Archbishop, the Mass is an opportunity to come together as the People of God and  recognize the sacrifice of police, firefighters, Department of Correction personnel and other safety employees, and to give reverence to those who have given their lives in service to their neighborhoods," the release said.

Thee Mass is open to the public, and people of all faiths are welcome to attend.

“It takes a special person to put the well-being of others ahead of him or herself,” he said, also in the release.

 "This year a memorial candle will be given to the family of Donavan Alden, a paramedic who was killed in a car accident in March on his way to work. The candle will be engraved with his name and feature the scripture passage, 'No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (John 15:13).'"

 
Lt. Mark Sticca of the Connecticut State Police Department, a member of the committee responsible for organizing the Mass, said, also in the release, that "families appreciate the prayers dedicated to their loved ones."

 “The Archdiocesan Blue Mass has become a tradition in the Archdiocese of Hartford. It brings family and friends together to pay their respects,” Sticca said. “We hope that friends and families will be part of this special prayer service.”

 
A procession featuring Honor Guards from the: Connecticut State Police, Hartford Police Department, Department of Correction, Statewide Fire Department, along with Connecticut State Police Bagpipers will begin at approximately 10:45 a.m. on Flower St. (a block away from the Cathedral) before the Mass.

Public invited to Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute at Connecticut State Capitol

HARTFORD - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission will  hold the 28th celebration of Dr. King’s life and legacy from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Jan. 20, 2014 at the State Capitol, according to a relase.

The event will be held in the Hall of Flags and the public i"s most cordially welcome to attend," the release said.

Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, State Treasurer Denise Nappier and "other luminaries" will attend, the release said.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission will honor three outstanding Connecticut women,  the release said.

"Tanya Hughes, executive director of the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities will be honored for her two decades of leadership in the field of civil rights; Victoria Christgau, who founded the Connecticut Center for Nonviolence at the request of legendary civil rights leader, educator and activist, Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Jr. will receive the community award. Also, Maggie Gardner, who in 2007 established Gardner’s House, Inc., to improve the course of personal recovery from cancer, and particularly for those living within Hartford’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods will receive the humanitarian award," the release said.
