NEW HAVEN – New Life Corporation and the Coalition for Working Families offer free tax preparation to low-moderate income individuals/families through the Volunteer Individual Tax Assistance Program.
Through the program, working individual and family households that earn less than $40,000 a year are assisted in accessing federal income credits while filing their income tax returns, at no cost, organizers said in a prepared statement.
With a month still remaining in the tax filing season, the two groups have already served more than 1,800 working residents and have returned over $4.9 million back to filers in Federal and Earned Income Tax Credits, the statement said.
“We continue to see an incredible increase in the number of low-moderate income families which are accessing this service yearly” said New Life Corporation’s Executive Director Ariel Martinez. “I attribute this to our dedicated volunteers, the outreach and marketing of the coalition and the statewide effort which New Life Corporation, State legislators, the IRS and other organizations are doing in promoting a state EITC program. “We are once again very hopeful that Connecticut will soon join the ranks of states that offer a state EITC in addition to the federal EITC.”
With its main office located at 540 Ella Grasso Boulevard, New Life Corporation runs five Volunteer Individual Tax Assistance sites, which include its office, Centro San Jose, 290 Grand Ave.; ‘r kids Family Center, 45 Dixwell Ave.; United Shoreline Federal Credit Union, 107 Whitney Ave., all in New Haven, and the West Haven Community House, 227 Elm St., West Haven.
