HAMDEN — Urbanminers, 30 Manila Ave., will present a free workshop about building chicken coops and raising hens at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Participants will learn to build chicken coops using recycled materials such as those found at Urbaminers, according to a statement. Materials, and do it yourself coop kits can be ordered. The workshop will be in the lecture room.
Michael Calhoun, a hen-keeper from Bethany, will provide a details based on his experience raising dozens of hens for a decade on his small farm. He will guide participants through a general outline of keeping hens: their behavior, diet, housing, security and health. There will be chickens on hand for demonstration.
Free coffee and snacks. Donations are accepted.
Urbanminers promotes environmental and social sustainability by salvaging building materials and household goods and selling them at prices affordable to average wage earners, and to support these activities specifically in urban areas, recognizing those locations as essential to the long-term sustainability of the economy and culture.
