New Haven tree pick up slated

NEW HAVEN - Holiday tree collection by the city Department of public Works will begin Jan. 2, the city said in a release.

The collection will continue throughout the month of January, the release said. 

"All decorations and plastic covers must be removed," the release said. "If a tree becomes frozen to the ground it will then fall upon the responsibility of the homeowner to remove the tree.

Reptiles and amphibians at the Westbrook Library

WESTBROOK - Potapaug Audubon will present  "Reptiles and Amphibians"  at 1 p.m.  Jan. 19 at the Westbrook Public Library 61 Goodspeed Drive, according to a release.
The speaker will be Kim Hargrave, a naturalist from Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic, the release said.
Hargrave will bring lots of live animals for the hands-on experience. The event is kid friendly and refreshments will be served.

Tai Chi series at New Haven Public Library

NEW HAVEN - The Saturday Tai Chi series at the New Haven Public Library continues in January, according to a release.

Kathleen Brenner will offer the class from Jan. 5 to Feb. 9, the release said.
Each class is one hour and starts at 11:30 a.m., the release said.
Brenner has studied tai chi for more than 20 years and has won many medals in international competitions, the release said, working under the direct guidance of Master Wang Hai Jin.
"Her series, which is suitable for most fitness levels, will teach a 10-form set of Yang style tai chi," the release said.
Advanced registration is required, either by calling the library at 203-946-8835, or online at www.2013taichi.eventbrite.com. The $30 series fee may be paid online or at the first class

New Haven will toll bells for Newtown

NEW HAVEN  — As Gov. Dannel Malloy signed a proclamation declaring Dec. 21, a “Day of Mourning” in the state, New Haven will participate in what is expected to be a state-wide moment of silence at 9:30 a.m., according to a statement.

"The moment of science will then be followed by the ringing of City Hall's bells twenty-six times in honor of each life lost last Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary," the statement said.

Mayor John DeStefano Jr. "has also set-up a one-time, voluntary payroll deduction for city employees to contribute to charities serving the families of the victims of the tragedy in Newtown. New Haven remains resolute in the effort at both the federal and state levels lobbying for stricter gun laws," the statement said.

In New Haven. concert for Newtown

NEW HAVEN – The Neighborhood Music School will host a Concert for Newtown at the school at 100 Audubon St., Thursday, at 8:15 p.m., with all proceeds going toward the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

Local New Haven area musicians are donating their time and talent in response to the Dec. 14 tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The Greater New Haven community is invited to the concert, which will feature a wide range of music by performers that includes Dr. Caterwaul's Cadre of Clairvoyant Claptraps, The Fiddleheads, Goodnight Blue Moon, The Jambones, José Oyola, the New Haven Chamber Klezmer Trio, Shawn Persinger is Prester John and The Sophistimacationers.

There is a suggested minimum donation is $10. All donations will go directly to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund, administered through the United Way of Western Connecticut. Community members who would like to donate but cannot attend the concert can do so athttps://newtown.uwwesternct.org/.
