Albertus Magnus College Celebrates Women's History Month

Albertus Magnus College will celebrate Women's History Month with a panel discussion from 5:30  to 7 p.m. March 28 at the Tagliatela Academic Center on the campus at 700 Prospect St. 

The program is the third in the Tagliatela Business and Leadership Lecture Series: Honoring our Diversity, according to a statement.

Participating in the dialogue are Kelly Matera '12, aspiring Broadway director;  Verica Milivojevic '04, doctoral student in biomedical sciences at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine; and Carolyn Vermont, manager with the New England Region of INROADS, which develops and places talented underserved youth in business and industry, preparing them for corporate and community leadership, the statement said.

Matera will graduate in May with a bachelor of arts degree in English, with dual concentrations in creative writing and dramatic studies, the statement said.  "A Dean's List student during her entire Albertus career, she is currently president of the College's English Club and of the Honors Program Club.  She has won the English Club's playwriting contest for four years and has acted in the annual spring production, this year directing Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night," the statement said.

Milivojevic fled her homeland of Bosnia-Herzegovina during the violence there in the early '90s, spending eight years in Germany, the statement said.  She arrived in New Haven in 2000, and on the recommendation of a high school biology teacher, an Albertus alumna, applied and was accepted.  She received a bachelor of science degree in biology (Honors Program). Her current research is on the effects of early life alcohol exposure and alcohol dependence in humans. In 2011 she received a poster award at the 13^th Congress of the European Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism in Vienna, Austria, the statement said..

Vermont, a workshop and retreat facilitator for the Commission on Children Parent Leadership Training Institute, currently volunteers as president of the Greater Bridgeport Branch NAACP, public relations chairwoman for the West Indian American Association of Greater Bridgeport and a member of the White House Council on Women and Girls, the statement said. 

She has served on the boards of countless community organizations, and received many awards for her service and commitment to the advancement of women.  Vermont received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Fairfield University, and pursued doctoral studies in the field of educational leadership at the University of Bridgeport, the statement said.
