Hospital of St. Raphael announces first birth at new center

The Hospital of St. Raphael announced Tuesday that it has celebrated the first birth of a baby in its new Romeo A. and Lena B. Vidone Birth Center.

Masadeh Shehadeh, of West Haven, delivered daughter, Sarah, at 12:34 p.m. on Jan. 25, the hospital said in a statement. Sarah was 19 1/2 inches long and weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces, the statement said. It was the sixth child for Shehadeh and her husband; all of the children were born at Saint Raphael’s, the statement said.

As Sarah is the first baby born in the new center, the hospital presented Shehadeh with a fruit basket and a gift certificate to a children’s store, the statement said.

“Shehadeh hadn’t heard of the newly renovated Vidone Birth Center before arriving to deliver her daughter and was pleasantly surprised by the soothing design of the labor and delivery rooms and postpartum rooms,” the statement said.

“It looks like a five-star hotel,” Shehadeh said, also in the statement. “You can’t ignore how beautiful it is; even my children were impressed. The service and the care of the nurses here is very good. I always leave happy from this hospital.”

The center was made possible by a $1 million gift from Dr. Romeo Vidone of Orange, as a tribute to his late wife, Lena B. Vidone.
